RE-SCALLION
HYDROPONIC CERAMIC PLANTER TO REGROW SCALLION
2018 | Co-designed with Ori Hirsch
We designed this project wanting to encourage and help people initiate environmental and consumption awareness and adopt sustainable behaviors in their lives. Our research led us to create a ceramic hydroponic planter, consisted of two vessels – one for water and one for the plants, designed to use and regrow scallions.

During our research, we experimented with different materials to use as the breeding platform and chose ceramics as it provided the best result for the longest lifespan. The vessel is made of terracotta clay and is only glazed on the inside, in the areas which come in contact with water. Preserving the natural material of the product and only glazing selected parts, provides the users with a sense of connection to the Earth as they can feel the raw material and interact with it, and also assists with reducing the ecological footprint of the product.

Vegetebles re-growth experiments, we chose the scallion since it was the fastest to grow

To examine growth platforms, we explored natural degradable materials as well as felt and ceramics

We tried differentt configurations and consturctions the growing platform

And chose one planter to contain all the scallions

Exploration of ceramic compound and textures

Selective glazeing process
By cutting the stem close to the root, and leave the root end inside the planter, the user will be able to consume the scallion and leave the excess to grow again. The planter prevents the vegetable from rotting so it can be cut and regrow many times, canceling the need to repurchase it often. In about one or two weeks the scallion will grow again fully and the process can be repeated.
